Concordia Men's Soccer Falls in Season Opener

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Concordia College Clippers Men’s Soccer team kicked off its 2011-12 season on the road against New York Institute of Technology Thursday with a 1-0 loss.

NYIT scored the lone goal of the game midway through the second half and held on for the victory. Clippers’ freshman goalie Oscar Acosta-Mendez had four saves in his first collegiate game, allowing just the one goal with less than 20 minutes remaining in the game.

“Oscar had a great game in the goal,” Clippers coach Craig Wilkerson said. “He came out for the ball, didn’t have control of the initial shot, but they got at it again for the second chance goal. We kept our heads up, created more chances and were staying positive throughout the entire game.”

Wilkerson said he was pleased with the play of his three midfielders; Richard Heredia, Xhovano Dardha and Mario Fantozzi, whose play helped to create chances and provided solid defense.

The Clippers (0-1, 0-0 in conference) will have a day off to prepare for its next game. Concordia will be back on the road to face Stonehill College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
