BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Incoming Bronxville High School senior Mary Cain capped off her World Championship run in Moscow on Thursday, falling short of the podium following her amazing run to the final.
Cain, the youngest runner in the field, finished 10th out of 12 runners in the women’s 1,500-meter race at the IAAF World Championships in Russia. She is the youngest finalist in IAAF history, though she failed to become the competition’s youngest medalist.
The Bronxville phenom finished in 4:07.19 seconds, with Abeba Aregawi of Sweden taking the gold in 4:02.67. Former world champion Jenny Simpson finished second, just .32 seconds behind Aregawi and Hellen Onsando Obiri of Kenya claimed the bronze by virtue of her 4:03.86 finish.
Cain posted the fourth best time (4:05.21), just off her personal best, in the semifinal. She was running up front with Simpson at the beginning of the race before falling off the pace and finishing in 10th position.
