BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Bronxville High School’s standout runner Mary Cain announced she will be going pro, according to a statement released Friday.

Cain, 17, finished 10th in the 1,500 meters this summer at the IAAF World Championships. She will be coached by Alberto Salazar. Ricky Simms of PACE Sports Management will be her representative.

“For the past couple of months, my family and I have been debating whether I should compete at a collegiate or professional level going forward,” Cain said in a statement. “I have decided, and am truly excited to announce, that I will be turning pro. I believe that, in the long run, this is the best way for me continue to develop as an athlete.”

Cain set junior records in the 800, 1,500 and mile during the outdoor season this year. She set records in the indoor season as well in the 1,500, 3,000 and two-mile. Some track and field observers believe she could be the most accomplished middle distance runner in the United States as her career unfolds.

Her father, Charlie, said his daughter will also pursue a college education while training. "How to proceed was always going to be a difficult choice,” he said in a statement. “Mary is a straight-A student and will be pursuing a college education while competing. This remains a priority and we think this approach is the best way to balance her educational and athletic goals.”
