The five-year plan, which extends from August 2013 through June 2018, includes several proposed changes. The district has outlined several amendments that will be made to evaluation systems, mentorship programs, human resources and professional development.

The goal of altering the principal and teacher evaluation system is to “implement the district’s Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) plan with consistency and accuracy," according to Assistant Superintendent Carl Albano.

Under the new system, which would be fully implemented by 2017, teachers would be observed as many as six times a year, while administrators would be observed annually. Evaluations would be under the standards of the Danielson rubric and the plan would include ways modifications could be realized to improve effectiveness in the classroom.

Discussions are currently underway to restore teacher mentoring in Tuckahoe with improvements to efficiency and training. Teacher leadership positions will be defined and established to help improve their abilities and the opportunities for students to learn. It is believed the overhauled mentoring program could be fully in place no later than 2016.

In an effort to continue recruiting the most talented educators in the country, a new human resources staff is being transitioned into the district. Tenure will be granted to the top performing teachers and administrators, and the support staff will be held to the highest standards.

The district seeks to “cultivate and nurture a community that values teaching and learning and engages its faculty and staff in ongoing improvement and professional growth,” Albano said. Tuckahoe schools will emphasize professional development aimed to help teachers ascertain the skills needed to meet the ever-evolving challenges of education.
