Iona, Concordia Employees Raise Funds For Pantry

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – HOPE Community Services food pantry volunteer John Meehan said he was pleased to see Iona and Concordia college employees doing their part for the community Thursday in their second annual charity softball game.

“You’ve got young people out there willing to just play a nice charity event,” Meehan said.

Iona College hosted the event at the school’s Rice Oval baseball field in collaboration with Concordia College as a way to raise money for HOPE Community Services and give back to the community.

Last year, the schools each donated $1,200 to the Eastchester Community Action Program food pantry during the event’s inaugural year at Concordia College in Bronxville.

More than $1,000 is expected this year when the teams present a check to HOPE early next week.

“We’re thrilled to be doing this in collaboration with Concordia, because we're always happy to give back to our local community,” said event co-chair Regina Reilly, graduate admissions counselor at Iona.

Co-chair Kathleen Hymes, administrative registrar at Concordia, said that there wasn’t a better way to give back than with a sporting event.

“You want to give and to make a difference in the community, and we have achieved that,” Hymes said.

HOPE Community Services, 50 Washington Ave., New Rochelle, offers a soup kitchen, a large food pantry and the Center for Hope. It originally was named Help Other People Eat when it opened in 1984.
