EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – After a lengthy search, the Bronxville School District has appointed Dr. Mara Koetke to the newly created position of director of curriculum and instruction.
Koetke comes to the district after serving six years as the principal of Public School #77, the Lower Lab School for Gifted Education. In Bronxville, she will be tasked with helping the district continue its transition toward the Common Core Learning Standards and developing a vision for the improvement of student performance.
The district enlisted the services of Martin Brooks, the director of the Tri-State Consortium, to determine what responsibilities and characteristics were most important in director candidates.
Among the characteristics Brooks, Superintendent David Quattrone and the Board of Education sought includes “a hands-on leader that builds effective relationships and engages in all stakeholders with a vision for the improvement of student performance and an educator that understands the complex relationships among assessment, instructional practice and curriculum, and how wise and meaningful use of technology can enhance those relationships.”
According to Quattrone, the district received more than 180 applications for the position, which was ultimately trimmed to the top 10 candidates. A faculty committee further pared the candidates list to five, with representatives from each school then interviewing those finalists, which saw Koetke emerge as the top choice for the position.
Quattrone noted that a background and reference checks came back with glowing remarks from Koetke’s mentor, and former supervisors.
“The screening committee praised Koetke’s analytical skills, her knowledge of technology and instruction, and her ability to engage others in problem solving,” he added.
Koetke will officially assume the position of Director of Curriculum and Instruction on July 1.
