On July 20, approximately 250 square feet of ceiling collapsed on the third floor hallway outside of the science classrooms. It was a Saturday afternoon and the building was vacant.
Since that incident, district architects, construction managers and a structural engineer inspected the entire building and determined that other portions of the third floor ceiling were also vulnerable to collapse, officials said.
On Monday, the Board of Education authorized emergency repair work that will cost approximately $470,000.
“The [inspection crews] concluded that the other portions of the third floor ceiling were potentially vulnerable based on the age of the building and visual evidence of separation among several ceiling elements: lathe, plaster and furring,” Superintendent David Quattrone said.
According to Quattrone, there is a remediation action plan in place to re-attach ceiling elements in the vulnerable sections of ceiling. In certain areas, the entire ceiling will be replaced, while others will remain untouched.
Construction work on the ceiling is expected to be completed by the time school begins next month. Quattrone said that this is a short-term repair, and that in the long-term, the district will likely replace the entire ceiling, which would require a more comprehensive plan and a referendum.
