The League and YPIE have been busy collecting donations from Bed Bath and Beyond that include everything a college student would need as they get ready to kickstart their college careers.

Items collected and distributed include blankets, bedding, towels, stationary and other essentials needed in a dorm room.

According to Rosalia Nocerino, the League’s Vice President of Communications, this is the second year the organizations have teamed up to help send 30 women to college that have been deemed “at risk.” Many of the students are the first in their family to go to college, and some are the first simply to graduate high school.

Each of the students are a part of the YPIE’s college preparatory program, which provides participants with the tools and tutoring necessary to embark on their college careers.

“The League is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community,” Steffi Porter, the Community Events co-chair noted. “(The drive’s) purpose is exclusively education and charitable, so it is in line with our mission.”

The drive concluded over the weekend, as the 30 future college freshmen made their way to the Yonkers Public Library Riverview room for a “shopping event,” where they perused the donations and picked their favorites. Porter and her colleagues spoke to the women and provided advice for them moving forward.

“My favorite part is speaking to the girls after they have had a chance to pick their items, finding out a little more about them and where they are going to college and what their hopes and goals are,” she added. “With this drive, we hopefully are able to ease the journey of these young women as they embark upon he great adventure of education and self-empowerment.”
