MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Gamers from throughout Westchester County came together to boot up their favorite video game consoles for a good cause, raising money for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Mount Pleasant.

For weeks, nearly 300 gaming enthusiasts throughout Westchester were busy, gathering sponsors to donate to the hospital based on how many hours were played as part of the national Extra Life program’s 24-hour gaming marathon.

Locally, a 12-hour gaming marathon was held on Saturday at the Westchester County Medical Center’s Taylor Conference Center, where participants squared off on everything from Playstation 4 and Wii U to GameCube, while current and former patients at the hospital watched on.

For the technologically un-inclined, organizers also arranged or a series of role-playing and traditional board games available. Prizes were awarded to the gamers by representatives from Nintendo and Microsoft.

In total, more than $25,000 was raised for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital through the local grassroots effort.

Since 2008, the Extra Life gaming program has raised more than $20 million for the 170 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in the country. Last year, more than $17,000 was raised for Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. There were other Extra Life fundraising events nearby in Mamaroneck and in New Paltz.
