Through a consortium of school districts, organized by Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES, the program allows students to take courses that are not offered at their own school and learn alongside teachers and students from across the region.

Using a blended learning approach, students and staff collaborated through face-to-face meetings and online work.

Wortel was among several students who participated in the OC21 program, which is offered to Bronxville High School students, and was encouraged to do so by counseling department director Anne Abbatecola.

Out of the eight online courses that were offered, Wortel said she chose to pursue anthropology to further expand her knowledge, interest and experience.

“It was a great experience,” Wortel said about the program. “I love world history and I felt like anthropology would be the best solution to broaden my horizons on the study of people. I love studying the culture of different people.”

Wortel, who will study abroad in Switzerland over the summer, said she interviewed a local chef to complete her final project on the study of food culture.

“The program is a wonderful opportunity for Bronxville students to exchange ideas and experiences with high school students from many other school districts and to form relationships with the teachers who deliver the online courses,” Abbatecola said. “I attended the end of the semester symposium and noted a strong connection between the teacher of each class and students as well, a unique and unanticipated outcome from an online course.
