All proceeds benefit pediatric brain tumor research at Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center, at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, where the Children’s Brain Tumor Project (CBTP) focuses on the research and treatment of rare and inoperable brain tumors that affect children and young adults.
The CBTP was founded, in part, with the support of Elizabeth Minter (Bronxville High School Class of 2009) and her family, longtime residents of Bronxville. Minter was diagnosed with gliomatosis cerebri in 2010 and died in 2012. Her neurosurgeon, Dr. Jeffrey Greenfield, is one of the co-directors of the CBTP and also a Bronxville resident.
The 5-mile race will start and end at the playing fields behind The Bronxville School. There will also be a shorter course (2+ miles) for walkers, runners, those walking dogs, and parents with baby strollers.
The day will also feature the 1-mile “Cristian Rivera’s ‘Kids Crush Cancer’ Dash” (for children 12 and younger). That event honors Cristian Rivera, who died in 2009 at age 6 of diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), one of the tumors under study at the CBTP. The date of the race is what would have been Cristian’s 12th birthday.
Cristian’s parents started the Cristian Rivera Foundation after his death to raise funds for Dr. Mark Souweidane’s research. Dr. Souweidane is director of pediatric neurosurgery at Weill Cornell and co-director with Dr. Greenfield of the CBTP.
The Kids’ Dash starts at 8 a.m. 5-mile race starts at 8:30, with 2-mile walk/run participants directly behind them. Awards presentations start at 9:30. Awards: Awards will be given in the 5-mile race to the top 3 male and female runners and the top 3 in each age group. In the Cristian Rivera Kids’ Dash, awards will be given to top boys and girls in under 6; 7 to 9; and 10 to 12 age groups, with finisher medals for all. Awards will also be given to the top three fund-raisers for the Children’s Brain Tumor Project.
Early registration is $35 for the 5-mile run and the 2.2-mile short course. Kids can participate in the Dash for $10 each (no charge for parents who run with their children). Race fees will increase closer to the event. Participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of $250 each from friends and sponsors to help reach a goal of $100,000 for this event.
