In 2013, the State Education Department approved the district’s proposed $10 million auditorium and science lab renovation, with construction starting in January last year. Originally scheduled to be open for the beginning of this academic year, the project has seen several delays, including the removal of the initial contractor for breaching contract.
Restoration and widespread repairs to the auditorium and science labs have been a concern of district officials since 2007. This is the first renovation of the auditorium – which was initially constructed in 1924 - since the 1960s.
The renovated auditorium features a side lobby addition and terrace, restored windows, new side balconies and wood trim throughout, reflecting the nostalgia of the original design. It will have a capacity of 500, with improved seating, acoustics and sightlines.
To celebrate the grand opening of the renovated auditorium, the district is hosting a star-studded community event featuring students, artists, faculty members, administrators and alumni. The High School Chorus, Orchestra and Band will perform, with opening remarks from Board of Education President Denise Tormey and Chairman of the Facilities Committee David Brashear.
The reception will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16 in the lobby of the auditorium with a string quartet performance. Student and faculty performances will start at 7 p.m.
According to school officials, “the auditorium has been transformed into a sophisticated, multi-use, high-performance theater through a complete renovation and reconstruction, which was finished this fall.”
