Scarsdale Schools Celebrate Chinese New Year

SCARSDALE – Scarsdale High School students in Wenhui (Phoebe) Gu's Mandarin class took part in several activities to mark the beginning of the Chinese, or lunar, new year, including studying the 12-year animal cycle. This is the year of the dragon.

Students wrote their own endings for a dragon-slaying story and acted them out using props, including a piece of red paper, a red scarf and a cane. The also learned some standard Mandarin phrases by which people wish each other good luck in the new year, and they chose their favorite good luck phrase and wrote it in calligraphy, practicing first on scrap paper, and then making a final copy on red paper.

The activities were among several around the Scarsdale School District over the past week. Friday, Fox Meadow and Heathcote elementary schools held dragon parades to welcome the New Year. And, earlier in the week at Heathcote, staff was treated to an authentic Chinese lunch by school parents.
