Bronxville Police Collect Unused Pills at Hospital

BRONXVILLE N.Y. - Many Bronxville residents took part in a program that Lawrence Hospital operates in cooperation with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency to safely dispose of unwanted prescription pills.

Bronxville Police Chief Christopher Satriale said the pills were collected to lower drug use on the street.

"The program was established to rid homes of unwanted and outdated prescription," Satriale said. "These days, it's not only illegal drugs that we see being abused but prescription drugs as well. Often times, the abusers of these drugs weren't even the people they were prescribed for."

Most people don't know how to dispose of their unused prescription drugs and often flush them down the toilet, Satriale said. The hospital and the DEA destroys them in a way that is good for the environment, he added.

In total, three large garbage bags of prescription drugs were collected.
