After spending more than a decade at war overseas, many aren’t eager to jump into another conflict. Obama seeks to retaliate after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad allegedly used nerve gas Aug. 21, killing more than 1,400 people, including women and children.
Locally, politicians weren’t eager to speak about the potential international issue, but members of Congress have shown underwhelming support according to a graphic from the Washington Post.
Last week, Michigan Republican Justin Amash took to Twitter to decry the proposed strike. “If you’re voting yes on military action in #Syria, might as well start cleaning out your office. Unprecedented level of public opposition,” he tweeted.
On Friday, Eastchester resident Lisa Bluth questioned the need for any military action, citing the events of the previous conflicts overseas.
“This is just like the last time, when there were no (weapons of mass destruction). Even if they used chemicals, you have the weigh the consequences of losing lives or any possible response,” she said. “I feel like it didn’t go so well the last time, so we need to be extremely cautious.”
Still, not everyone was against possible military action. In Mount Vernon, Glen Richards said a line needs to be drawn, and that deploying the chemical weapon was unacceptable.
“Someone has to police these things, countries can’t just go around unchecked,” he said. “We need to be cautious, but it’s a necessary evil. They used illegal chemical gas, there has to be a response.”
