Dr. John F. Bertles, MD, 88, Of Bronxville, Hematologist

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - John F. Bertles, MD, of Bronxville died April 6. He was 88.

Dr. Bertles was born June 8, 1925, in Spokane Wash, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on a minesweeper off the coast of California. He graduated from Yale University class of 1945 and from Harvard Medical School class of 1952. He specialized in hematology. At the time of his death, he was professor of medicine emeritus for life at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. He had served as director of Transfusion Services (1981 to 1995) at St. Luke's - Roosevelt Hospital Center and chief of Hematology - Oncology (1962 to 1995) of the Medical Service at St. Luke's. At the National Institute of Health, he was on the Hematology Study Section and the Blood Research Review Board (1972 to 1984).

He received a Pioneer Award from the National Sickle Cell Disease Program of the NIH. He was an attending physician in the Medical Service from 1962 to 1995 at St. Luke's - Roosevelt Center, attending physician 1995 to 1997 at Montefiore and Career Scientist from 1962 to 1975 at the Health Research Council of New York City.

Dr. Bertles is survived by his wife, Lila; children, Mark, Jacquelyn and John; and three grandchildren.

Calling hours are Thursday, April 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Friday, April 11 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fred H. McGrath and Son Funeral Home , Bronxville. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at the funeral home.
