Castelo was among 120 immigrants who will now know White Plains as the place where they first became Americans.

A naturalization ceremony was held at the Richard J. Daronco Courthouse on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in order to honor their efforts -- and those of their families -- in becoming citizens of the U.S.

"It feels great to be an American," Castelo said. "This has all been very emotional."

County Clerk Timothy Idoni swore in the full room of new citizens and led them in their first pledge of allegiance as Americans. Several teared up and clutched the hands of their family members.

County Executive Rob Astorino welcomed the group with his own remarks afterwards, congratulating them on their hard work and persistence.

Astorino jokingly reminded the group that when asked, to always say they root for the Yankees and not the Mets.

Acting State Supreme Court Justice Janet Malone told the citizens of their important obligations as Americans, including serving on juries, volunteering in their communities and challenging their governments.

"God bless you, your families, your dreams and the United States of America," she said.

Members of the Daughters of Revolution, League of Women Voters and the National Ladies Auxiliary of the Jewish War Veterans were also present to hand the new citizens pamphlets and small American flags after they accepted their certificates.

The participants were then asked to come receive their certificates, take a picture with Astorino, Idoni and Malone in front of the American flag, and go on to register to vote and get passports.
