The quick-moving snowstorm began in Westchester at around 6:30 a.m. with 2-4 inches expected to accumulate by 5 p.m. and into the evening rush hour. A Winter Weather Advisory has been put in place for 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Westchester County, the National Weather Service said.
Icy conditions were reported early Tuesday, as precipitation from Monday was freezing in roads, parking lots and sidewalks.
"It's not bad right now, but it looks like it will be messy later today," said Dobbs Ferry resident Charlie Brennan. "I'm driving to work in White Plains so it should be okay."
Hastings Rivertowns Taxi driver John Dean said roads were beginning to get slippery at about 9 a.m.
"It was getting a little worse (by 9 a.m.)," Dean said. "Just take it easy."
The Hudson Valley Traveler, which tracks road closures, traffic and accidents in Westchester, posted a accident report on the Sprain Brook Parkway at Mile Marker 5.0 in Greenburgh at North Jackson Avenue that involved two cars but was not delaying traffic. There were no other significant weather-related delays through the morning rush hour on major highways including 684 and 287.
Many school districts had also cancelled after-school programs and evening events.
Westchester County government posted a weather advisory with information on Bee Line bus schedules or emergency telephone numbers for those who may experience power outages.
With snow continuing through the afternoon, drivers can expect delays and are warned to drive carefully. Monday's weather was the cause of a 27-car accident on the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers that results in 30 minor injuries.
The New York State Department of Transportation offers advice on driving in winter weather on its website.
Tuesday’s high temperatures are expected to reach about 32 degrees over much of the region. Low temperatures of about 20 degrees are expected late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
