Green is the theme in Eastchester
It was green, it was free and it was the Fourth Annual Green Day Celebration and Summit held in Eastchester on Saturday.
The Eastchester Environmental Committee sponsored the event that brought together close to 65 vendors and was free of charge for both participants and vendors.
Pat Mastellone, of Eastchester, is one of the nine members of the committee and the organizer of the event. "We want to bring awareness of the environmental issues and solutions facing us," she said.
Mastellone, and fellow committee member Theresa Nicholson of Eastchester, said getting greener does not have to be difficult.
"One of the first easy things that can be done is changing to energy saving light bulbs," she said
This year, for the first time, the committee was selling composting containers and rain barrels.
Nicholson provided a recipe for composting.
"You throw in all of your kitchen waste, with the exception of meat or bones. No meat or bones," she said.
Mixed in with the kitchen waste, should be leaves, and even newspapers. Cover and let stand. Every few weeks or so, uncover and poke holes in order to let some air into the mixture.
"If you leave it sit long enough it becomes mulch, which you can use to help your garden grow,"she said.
Mastellone said that she installed two solar attic fans this spring, which will use the power of the sun to cool the summer heat in her attic.
Another of Mastellone's favorite greening tips is one she calls "love em and leave em." Instead of raking leaves, she recommends mulching them down and leaving on the ground where they can help the grass grow.
Mastellone said the message of the vendors and the committee is that going green is possible and necessary. "We want people to become increasingly aware of small changes that can be made to homes and businesses that will help the environment," she said.
