Denise Delgado-Karman was one of the residents who were out getting food after the storm had subsided Tuesday afternoon.
“Bronxville did very well from what I’ve seen,” Delgado-Karman said. “I live over in Midland Gardens, and we have power and didn’t have any flooding or major damage. I really had thought that Bronxville would’ve been hit much harder, but all I can say is that we’re very lucky.”
People prepared better for Hurricane Sandy, but the storm damage didn’t come close to Hurricane Irene's last year, said Bronxville resident Gabriel Lizzi.
“We all thought it was going to be a lot worse, but it really wasn’t,” Lizzi said. “From what I’ve seen, there’s only been a bunch of broken branches and leaves everywhere. Everybody was preparing for this major storm that was going to destroy Bronxville, but it just never really hit us. We are just really lucky.”
Although many residents say they suffered minimal damage from Hurricane Sandy, the cleanup will take about two weeks, and it’s uncertain when power will be fully restored, said Public Works employee Louie Sanita.
“We’re going to be out here fully staffed, working overtime to get this mess sorted out,” Sanita said. “There are many trees knocked over, wires down, and even more branches and garbage all over the place. Most of the village is still without power, and I’ve barely seen any Con Ed trucks around. It really is going to take a lot of work.”
