Westchester Native Browne Shows Art In Bronxville

BRONXVILLE N.Y. - Westchester native and former Bronxville resident Brian Browne is the October artist of the month at the Bronxville Women's Club, where his paintings are on display as part of the program.

Always interested in art, Browne painted as a child, studied art throughout his academic career, then worked with some New England artists. Browne put his painting aside after starting a family, but was encouraged by his wife to start again during his free time in the evenings.

"I truly love painting," said Browne. "It's like you sometimes forget the things you love, and then you find them again when you least expect it. What I'm interested in is merging action and feelings. The act of painting is part of the work, and the action seeks to express the emotion."

Browne grew up in Tarrytown, then lived in Bronxville with his wife and son from 1998 to 2003. He now divides his time between New York City, where he works as a lawyer; and Portland, Maine, where his family lives. Browne has produced about 40 paintings in the past two years. He describes himself as an abstract expressionist painter, and said he's inspired by the works of Willem de Kooning, Brice Marden and Gerhard Richter.

"The reception for my art in Bronxville went really well," said Browne. "I really enjoyed meeting the people who came to view my work, and the chance to see old friends. The great thing about art is that it creates community, and the Bronxville Women's Club really allows for that."

While Browne isn't currently represented by any commercial galleries, he said that a goal of his is to be featured in one sometime soon.

"In the future, I'd like to devote myself more and more to painting, especially to larger works," said Browne. "Art is a practice, and it's a way of communicating with other people what it's like to be human. I would certainly say it's my favorite pastime. I truly love it."

Browne's work can be viewed, free of charge, at the Bronxville Women's Club, 135 Midland Ave., from Oct. 1 through Oct. 26. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
