BRONXVILLE N.Y. - Along with downed trees and power lines, Hurricane Sandy caused The Bronxville High School to postpone its production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" to this week, where it will be performed in the school's auditorium Thursday through Saturday.

The play is based on Anne Frank's diary, " The Diary of a Young Girl," which she started writing in 1942. Frank kept the diary for two years while her family hid during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. She was only 15 when she died with most of her family in a Nazi concentration camp in 1945.

The play was chosen because the students were right for it, said the play's director Peter Royal.

"Most of these kids don't really understand this part of history," said Royal. "They can read about it, and they can learn about it in their history classes, but actually acting it out has educated them in a way not possible otherwise. It's almost like a staged documentary, which is very real for the actors and audience."

Many of the students participating in the play including junior Kailey Winston, who plays Miep Gies, a close friend of the Frank family, said that the play has an ability to take a person on an emotional roller coaster.

"There are a lot of moments in the play where I could just cry," said Winston. "It has the ability to go from being really happy to really sad in a moment. When I first heard that we were going to be doing Anne Frank, I was a little skeptical, but in the end I couldn't be any happier. I feel it opened my eyes to something I couldn't fully understand before."

While the play should be an amazing experience, people who plan on attending should know that it will also be an intense experience, said Royal.

"Now I'm not trying to scare anybody away, I just want to let them know that what they're going see will be emotional," said Royal. "It's very sad because it's very authentic. You're not going to come here and get sunshine musical. You will get a wonderful production with amazing actors, and a show that will surely resonate with everyone for a long time."

Tickets are $10 at the door. The performances are Thursday and Friday at 5:00 p.m., and Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
