@dennis.mcdermott. Twisting what facts exactly? HUD has ADMITTED they have gone beyond the scope of the judgement and feel justified in doing so! What has made Westchester unaffordable is the exponential growth in tax rates, primarily foisted upon residents by liberal tax and spend politicians. This so-called Affordable Housing judgement will make Westchester even more unaffordable for long term residents who can no longer afford the escalating taxes and subsidies for those who do not pay their fair share View Comment
Thank you for pointing out Cuomo's disgraceful HUD pedigree. He, as Gov, is not lifting a finger to protect Westchester residents, as would be his sworn duty.... Mr. Astorino is our last line of defense against this insidious power grab on the part of the Federal Government. If he loses in Nov, Westchester is lost. View Comment
Hal, I appreciate what you are saying and on its face, using an existing program seems logical, but not only did I look both ways pulling out of the driveway, as you suggested, I've anticipated what's coming around the bend up the street. A) Some landlords do not wish to be drawn into the Section 8 administrative issues - they can be very problematic at times (works for many, but there are problems), B) it is legal tender in a sense but doesn't cover the full rent and isn't market sensitive (everyone else must live by market rates), C) finally, the biggest issue ...Around the bend, so to speak...insolvency. He who giveth can taketh away and unless we as a country manage our budgets and assets properly, programs such as Section 8 will exist for no one. Aside from this, we've worked multiple jobs to keep our kids in a good school - one will graduate this year, the other is in 8th grade.n would you like to explain to my son that we must pull him out of a school district he's been in since kindergarten and move because???? What?? Other people DESERVE to live here more than he and his parents who bust their butts? View Comment
Thank you fedupinny, I was feelin' a little lonely! As for your pondering 'is this going to spread to the rest of the country'... YES! Unbeknownst to many, that was the intention of the suit in the first place. These suits were lined up and triggered when Obama was elected. Westchester's was the FIRST- intended to SET PRECEDENT. This is a nationwide, social engineering power grab. For those posters telling the County Executive to 'grow up', they should be contrite for their comments. This man isnt defending us against some minor judgement; this will most likely end up as a Supreme Court case (as in US Supreme Court, not NY State). The stakes are incredibly high for Westchester, the rest of the country and dare I say, our children's futures. There will be no where a hard working US citizen can go..... View Comment
Mr Mendes, I greatly appreciate your frustration with this situation, and you are obviously better informed than most on the subject, but I disagree that Mr Astorino has done a poor job. He has been the single stalwart defender of Home Rule, at his own personal peril. HUD has bullied him (and our county).... Thank you President Obama AND former HUD official, our Governor Andrew Cuomo (who has lifted not a finger to defend the county) The long term consequences are an utter usurping of all zoning ..all... Zoning This would irreparably harm our communities; bureaucrats in DC would decide who lives and works where, without a care to the unique communities built over hundreds of years. Finally, the Federal Gov is holding OUR money hostage. They tax and extort - it is disgraceful. For those reasons, I personally appreciate Mr Astorino's efforts on our behalves. View Comment
Hal " doesn't even effect the wallets of the better off?". Surely you jest...
First, define 'better off'. Better off than who? There will always be some 'better off' than others, unless of course you achieve your utopian society where all are equal, and ergo mediocre.
Secondly, of course it has an effect! 'Affordable Housing' makes housing UNAFFORDABLE for people currently working hard and paying taxes to remain in a chosen community. THEIR property taxes will rise to offset those who do not equitably pay, THEIR property values will fall, eroding what is most people's primary asset, THEIR school taxes will rise.... You will fine an exodus of hard working people, leaving those who have no intention of shouldering the cost of maintaining a community because they feel entitled to reside there. Don't believe me? Answer please WHY NY State LOST two congressional seats. View Comment
For what we pay in taxes to the school, our SAT scores sure as heck sould be higher than the state avg. The 'state avg' is just mediocre cover for the education union's epic fail with our state's children. View Comment
Well let's hope the Feds are happy. They are getting a whole entire show dedicated to showing people how to take from the taxpayers vs working hard and doing for themselves....like me and my family did....working for decades to get a tiny house. The Feds continue to tamper and social engineer - it does great harm. They assume all minorities are stupid and can't do for themselves. It's insulting - they just use minorities as pawns and suckers.
Thank goodness for our County Executive. He is doing this to keep the Feds at bay- they continually try to redefine their own agreement after the fact. Sickening. View Comment
We need the tax revenue and the site is an eyesore, BUT all net gains are lost if students are allowed in our ever- growing, budget heavy school! The Boards...Zoning Planning and Trustees...whoever MUST REQUIRE AND AGE- RESTRICTED BUILDING.
It will already be assessed at a lower rate, so even one extra student makes it a money loser! View Comment
I get EVERYTHING from Womrath. It is an amazing resource for young and old. The staff will suggest books, order books, including out of print books! They have gift certificates and gift wrapping too. The experience of going into the store and browsing and chatting adds to the experience of reading the books themselves. I see zero need to use Amazon with such a rich resource right here in the Village. View Comment
Sorry T. Nice try but you just listed the bill of goods you've been sold from a lying fraud. What is mathematically unsustainable is how it will be paid for. I bet you actually believe it will be from the evil selfish 1 percent? It will be paid for temporarily on the backs of the middle class, and then it will all collapse. Sorry to burst the bubble and I do empathize as we have been stretched to the limit due to expenses, but they are the responsibility of my family.... Not my neighbor. BTW no one goes without healthcare in this country...everyone is served. That will not be the case after Obamacare as there will be a mass exodus of physicians. Are you going to force good drs to practice at gunpoint? There will be a shortage of healthcare providers, expenses will skyrocket, taxes are being levied to finance this fraud everywhere you turn including selling your house, and care/ research will become mediocre at best. This has NOTHING to do with healthcare as you describe it...it is a power grab under the emotionally charged guise of healthcare. That's what con men do, and you've been taken for a sucker. 'Seischab, who has relatives living in Europe, said it’s strange that America is so hesitant to adopt widespread healthcare coverage because simply because they are afraid of socialism.'
In what alternate universe do these people reside? Europe is collapsing. People who believe this has anything to do with good healthcare are deluding themselves. It is a TAX.... Obama lied to push this through and gain control of our lives and the economy. It is a mathematically impossible, unsustainable system that sets us on the same course as a collapsing Eurozone. The short term thinking of those 'celebrating' this 'victory' is pathetic.
