BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Bronxville's Mary Cain continued her rise in the world of track and field, winning state championships in indoor and outdoor track while qualifying for the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials and Junior World Championships.
Currently a junior at Bronxville High School, Cain dominated New York State and East Coast track and field at the 800, 1,500 and mile distances, setting numerous local and national records for her age group last spring as a sophomore.
Cain moved easily through her winter indoor and spring outdoor seasons, taking state titles in several events and qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800-meter run. She clocked a 2:04.11 in the 800-meter run in the preliminaries at the U.S. Track and Field Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and placed 18th overall.
The Bronxville High phenom ran the second fastest high school girls' 1,500 meters in U.S. history at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Bloomington, Ind., with a 4:14.74, to win the national title in July. The win earned her a spot in the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona.
In Spain, Cain finished sixth in the finals of the 1,500 - meter race at the International Association of Athletics Federation World Junior Championships. The stellar sophomore clocked a personal best time of 4:11.01.
