Six Bronxville Girls Medal at State Track Meet

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Mary Cain won the New York State and Federation titles in the 1,500-meter run Saturday and five Bronxville High School girls' track athletes won medals in the New York State Track and Field Championships at Cicero-North High School.

Cain, a sophomore star middle distance runner who has achieved Olympic Trials qualifying time standards in both the 800 and 1,500 meters and is hoping to earn a spot in the trials later this month if she places high enough among qualifiers, ran a time of 4:19.78 in rainy and wet track conditions. She won the New York state Public Schools Division II small schools title and took the Federation championship, which includes athletes from parochial, private and New York City Schools as the best at her event in the state.

Courtney Campbell ran a 2:16.92 to take third spot in Division II and 12th overall in the Federation rankings, while teammate Emilie Hoffer ran a 10:25.64 for fourth in Division II and 14th in the Federation. Clare Sargent's toss of 37-feet, 4 3/4-inches in the shot put placed fourth in Division II. The Broncos 4 x 800-meter relay team of Campbell, Meredith Rizzo, Hilary Rizzo and Hoffer then combined for a 9:18.37, their best of the season, to take third place in Division II and ninth in the Federation standings,

"Congratulations to all the girls who made state and all medalled," Bronxville coach Jim Mitchell said. "Clare had a great throw, Courtney and Emilie had excellent individuals runs and we had a very competitive relay."
