Richter, Reynolds Give Bronxville Section 1 Field Hockey Title

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Bronxville enjoyed and savored winning the 2011 Section 1 Class C field hockey championship so much, the Broncos wanted to experience that same feeling once again.

Charlotte Reynolds, left, and Gretchen Richter each had a goal and an assist in Bronxville's 2-0 win over Pawling in the Section 1 Class C field hockey title game Thursday.

Gretchen Richter and Charlotte Reynolds ensured the Broncos winning experiece, each registering a goal and an assist as the No. 1 seed defeated second-seeded Pawling, 2-0 in the Section 1 Class C field hockey championship game at Mamaroneck High School.

Bronxville, which improved to 16-2-1 on the season, will play Section 9 titlist Pine Plains in a regional semifinal noon Saturday at Lakeland High School. Pawling concludes with a 16-2-1 record.

“Winning it again this year is even better, especially being a senior,” captain Hillary Hamann said. “We didn’t know what to expect last year but we wanted to win it so badly. In this moment, with this team, it makes it really exciting.”

Richter, who opened the scoring with 7:37 remaining in the first half, agreed with her teammate.

“Last year was nice, but this year is even better,” Richter said. “When the first goal hit the back of the cage, it was such a rush of emotion. I never felt so good in my life.”

Richter was drawing double and triple teams every time the ball was on her stick. However, she was able to evade the defense on her goal. Senior and captain Brooke Bonfiglio initiated the play with a free hit on the right wing. She passed across the field to Blake Brashear, who then led Reynolds down the left wing. Richter burst through Pawling’s defense, received the pass and scored.

Richter returned the favor on Reynolds’ goal with 44 seconds remaining in the first half as she corralled a pass on the right-wing side. Reynolds filtered to the center and Richter put a pass right on her teammate’s stick. Reynolds controlled it and deposited a shot home.

“Usually that is where Ally is so I just thought to myself what would Ally do,” said Richter of right wing Ally Pass. “Once I saw Charlotte in the middle, I saw an open opportunity.”

The Bronxville defense of Elena Licursi, Audrey Lemberger, Claire Sargent and Hamann kept Pawling without a shot on goal for the game’s first 50 minutes.

“We have a motto this year that we will ‘Hustle with heart,’" Hamann said. “That’s what we did. We all supported each other, kept pushing and never gave up.”
