Mount Vernon Captures 11th State Boys Basketball Championship

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - Although they faced a veteran squad from Fairport, the Mount Vernon boy’s varsity basketball team rolled to their first New York State championship in five years, when they topped Fairport 59-48 in Sunday’s title game in Binghamton.

Led by Jason Douglas-Stanley’s 16 points, the Knights capped off their championship season in impressive fashion, using their size and speed to capture their 11th Class AA title. Both Douglas-Stanley and Noah Morgan were named to the all-tournament team. John Richardson was also given the sportsmanship award.

Following their victory, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas praised coach Bob Cimmino and his squad for bringing home championship gold from Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. He said he “cannot wait to welcome them home for a ‘Parade of Champions’ to celebrate together as one big family."

“Mount Vernon is back and all of New York State knows it. Congratulations to our hard-working young men, Coach Bob Cimmino and his staff, each of whom have made the entire port city proud,” he added. “The Knights exemplify the values our community holds dear - discipline, teamwork, trust, and the determination to never give up.

“Their victory is our victory as it inspires all of us to strive for glory. Moments like this plant seeds of aspiration in our youth, molds their character to be of courage and reinvigorates hope for the future.”

Cimmino could not be immediately reached for comment as he celebrated his championship. Thomas went on to praise Fairport for a solid season that fell just short of championship gold.

“Though unsuccessful, congratulations to Fairport for competing with vigor and passion throughout their season. The sportsmanship they demonstrated reflects their fine training and they are to be commended for a challenging game."
