MIDDLEBURY, VT. -- Liz Garry arrived at Middlebury College her freshman year looking forward to playing field hockey after an outstanding career at Rye Country Day School. The Mamaroneck resident did not realize, at the time, that this would be the start of a Westchester County field hockey connection. Garry is one of seven girls from Westchester County on the Middlebury field hockey team. Joining Garry are fellow senior Lucy Jackson, a Bronxville resident, Mamaroneck graduates Charlotte Gardiner and Madeleine Despins, Scarsdale alumni Margaret Souther and Emily Knapp and Deidre Miller, from Rye. Rachel Kim, who helped led Bronxville to the 2008 Section 1 Class C title and state final four, was on the team last year.
I think its awesome, said Garry of having six fellow Westchester County residents on the team. Weve all gotten to know each other and they have become my best friends. It is the 914 area code coming up to Vermont.
Middlebury opened the season with a 3-2 win, in strokes, over rival Tufts. Middlebury accomplished this thanks to freshmen, Despins and Knapp. Despins had a goal and an assist and Knapp came in and stopped three strokes to cement the win.
That was really exciting and a really big win against a very strong Tufts team, said Garry, who is majoring in the History of Art and Architecture and minoring in Sociology. We have a a great group of freshmen, who are really strong, and a great group of returning players.
Garry and Souther start at right and left back, respectively, Jackson is at right midfield and Gardiner is the right wing. Garry, a Mamaroneck resident, said Middlebury coach Katharine DiLorenzo has zeroed in on Westchester because of the excellent field hockey players and programs.
The level of field hockey in Westchester continues to go up with successful athletes, like Melissa Gonzalez, who is on the Olympic team, Garry said. Middlebury is also appealing to student-athletes. Middlebury is a special place with a lot to offer, Garry said. You will receive an excellent education and you can also play high-level athletics.
One example is field hockey.
