Marrone's Defense Leads Bronxville Basketball To Win

BRONXILLE, N.Y. – Luke Marrone set the tone defensively for Bronxville's basketball team with a blocked shot in the opening minutes against Tuckahoe Friday.

Bronxville's Luke Marrone, #20, registers one of his three blocked shots.

Bronxville's Matt Tormey, #21, blocks a shot.

Tuckahoe's Maurice Hollis swishes a 3-pointer.

It was a theme that would pick up momentum with each Bronxville defensive stand as the Broncos overwhelmed Tuckahoe, 62-43 in a Section 1 boys basketball game.

Marrone and Matt Tormey each had three blocked shots as Bronxville had one of its best defensive performances of the season. Bronxville led 38-17 at the half.

“Coach puts me in for defense so I am always thinking defense first and putting 100 percent into my defense,” said Marrone, who will attend Brown University in September.

Bronxville coach Brian Senior said he knows he can always count on Marrone’s defensive intensity.

“Luke is our No. 1 defender who is playing out of position,” Senior said. “We’ve had a rash of injuries to our big man so Luke is not a center, but more of a power forward. It doesn’t matter though, whether the player is 6'6" or 5'6", Luke has the athletic ability to guard the player.

“He is one of the most unselfish players and will do anything to make the team better. Luke does a lot of the dirty work for us that goes unnoticed."

Marrone’s defensive impact carried over to the offensive end as he scored the first six points of the second quarter. It initiated a 14-0 run that pushed Bronxville to a 27-9 lead.

“When you have a big stand on defense it’s like you get an adrenaline rush on offense,” said Marrone, who finished with six points.

When Marrone was given a rest, Tormey came in for him and provided Bronxville with more defensive presence. This was Tormey’s first game back since a knee injury in December. Tormey led the Broncos’ balanced scoring with nine of his 11 points in the second quarter.

“Matt did a great job,” Marrone said. “He just came back from a knee injury and has been working hard in practice. It was good to see him back on the court.”

Dylan Murray finished with nine points for the Broncos and Ned Carpenter added eight points.

Shyheim Nixon led Tuckahoe with a game-high 14 points and Maurice Hollis had 11.
