BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Former Concordia College baseball player Christopher Motta made his professional debut for the Australian Baseball League’s Canberra Cavalry on Nov. 3.

Motta started the second game of a doubleheader against the Cavalry’s rival, the Sydney Blue Sox. He pitched six innings in a no-decision and gave up just one earned run on three hits. He also struck out four batters, including the first two he faced.

The Cavalry scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn its first win of the season. Canberra is now 1-2.

Motta, a Bronx native, graduated from Concordia in the spring with a degree in education. He trained in Florida as he sought the chance to sign a professional baseball contract. Eventually, a Cavalry coach noticed him and Motta traveled more than 10,000 miles to make his debut.

Major League Baseball and the Australian Baseball Federation co-own the Australian Baseball League. The latter serves as the ABL’s governing body.

The Canberra Cavalry were founded in 2010 and play home games at Narrabundah Ballpark.
