EASTCHESTER, N.Y. The Children Understanding Cultural Difference eighth-grade boys basketball team split two games in weekend play, losing to Eastchester 49-32 Saturday before defeating Ardsley in a Sunday matchup.
Eastchester got strong performances from Greg Satriale, Rory Allen and John Guido Jr. to extend 19-13 halftime lead and earn the win.
The CUCD eight graders recovered Sunday to earn its first win of the season over Ardsley at Tuckahoe High School as seventh grade coach Donald Gunther subbed in as coach to lead the boys in a game against Robert Jacobson. The CUCD boys led 26-20 at the half and went on to the victory.
Robert Kiernan, Christian McHugh, Frank Tauson, Sammy Roque and Brad Pantal led the way along with strong bench play from Isaiah Williams, Jacob Risci, Richard Jacobs, Trevor Knuth, Michael McLaughlin and Dishon Wise.
After giving up a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter and losing Christian McHugh (foul out) the boys closed out the win. Roques two free throws with four seconds remaining to seal the victory.
I must say that the team played well and never quit, Gunther said. I am proud of these young men. Ive known a lot of them for a long time and it is nice to see their maturation as they learn to compete. This was the programs first win for our eighth graders after three games against "A" level competition.
