BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Concordia College men’s basketball coach Brian Sondey gladly accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and nominated returning seniors Tshyrad Oates, Ivan Tchatchouwo, and Chris Gordy to complete the challenge on Sunday, Aug. 17.

The seniors then had 24 hours to complete the challenge and/or donate to the cause of defeating ALS. Tchatchouwo embraced the challenge first and had his ice bucket video up within hours of the challenge.

“I feel that this challenge is for a great cause and brings everybody together,” Tchatchouwo said. “Whether you are donating or taking the challenge it brings awareness to the disease and hopefully this raises (a lot of) money,” he continued.  Oates was not far behind in completing his ice bucket challenge.

“When I first heard of the ice bucket challenge I told friends if nominated I wouldn’t do it as I was unaware that it was for such a great cause,” Oates stated. “Then of course I got nominated by my coach, so I had to look into what ALS was all about and what this challenge actually meant. Pete Frates is the man who inspired the Ice Bucket Challenge phenomenon and I hope people look up to his story as I did. Once I became aware I wanted to also help spread the word and was more than happy to take the challenge and pass it on to friends.”

One of the friends Oates passed the challenge to is professional guard Tyshawn Taylor. Taylor and Oates both played at St. Anthony’s High School in New Jersey. Since then, Taylor has played in a NCAA Division I National Championship game with the University of Kansas and has played professionally with the Brooklyn Nets.

"The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a movement that’s been sweeping social media so I had to take part,” Taylor said.
