BRONXVILLE, N.Y. –  The National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) will visit the campus of Concordia College on Thursday and Friday for a diversity-in-education workshop dealing with sports in society. The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Nancy Kaplan, associate vice president for Academic Support Services and Student Development at St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y.“The purpose of the workshop is to assist student-athletes in applying the principles of teamwork to all areas of their lives,” Kaplan said. “It provides a safe environment for participants to discuss issues of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation and all forms of diversity. Student athletes will leave the workshop with a greater understanding of diversity, leadership and creating environments of inclusiveness.”The vision of the NCAS is to create worldwide social justice through the power of sport. Kathy Laoutaris, Concordia’s associate athletic director, described the workshop as step in helping student/athletes develop leadership skills. “We are so excited to have NCAS on our campus,” Laoutaris said. “This is a great first step in preparing our student athletes to be positive role models in our community.”For information on the program, go to www.concordiaclippers.com .
