Clippers Men Jump Past Felician in Overtime

Argelix Gil scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Concordia College Clippers men's basketball in a 79-75 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opening-day victory against Felician College Wednesday.

The Clippers (4-2, 1-0 CACC) jumped out to an early 11-4 lead and extended the lead to 10 after a layup by sophomore Jahrod Lide (Bronx, N.Y.) with 5:22 remaining in the first half. Concordia held onto the 10-point margin when the period ended, 37-27.

The Clippers extended their lead to 16 after a jump shot by junior Brandon Whitaker (Harlem, N.Y.) with 14:18 remaining in the second half, but the host Golden Falcons went on a 13-2 run in the next 4:34 to cut their deficit to only five points with just less than 10 minutes to play. Felician tied the game at 64-64 after a free throw at the 4:32 mark and the game was headed for overtime.

Three straight baskets to begin the overtime period for Concordia secured the win. The Golden Falcons had a chance to tie the game from the free throw line with three seconds to play but missed both attempts.

Gil led the Clippers with 8-of-15 shooting from the field and added nine steals as he almost recorded a triple-double. Sophomore Norman Pope (Washington, D.C.) added 16 points, three steals, three assists and two rebounds for Concordia.

Concordia will be on the road again Saturday at Dominican College for a 3 p.m. in Orangeburg, N.Y.
