City Island Rowing, With Bronxville Members, Heads To State Championships

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Coming off an incredibly strong showing at last weekend’s Long Island Championships rowing regatta, the young women of City Island Rowing Club, with many Westchester members, will be looking to take that momentum into this weekend’s State Championships to be held in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

“Our results from last weekend were very encouraging, a fitting reward for the hard work and dedication that these athletes have shown” reports head coach and club founder, Guy Monseair.

The team took home five golds, six silvers and one bronze medal racing against 38 regional teams from Long Island, Westchester, Connecticut and New Jersey, most of whom they will face again this weekend. There is a lot at stake this weekend, not only are State Champion titles on the line, but so too are bids to the National Championships to be held June 12 through 14 in Sarasota, Fla.

“The fastest two crews from each varsity event get an automatic bid to Nationals. We will be up against some big teams that were not at last weekend’s regatta, so we know we have to find one more gear to earn those bids. But the girls are working hard, they have been putting in morning and afternoon practices to give themselves their best chance,” Monseair continued.

City Island Rowing started its Nationals campaign in earnest with a winter training trip to Georgia in February. They took nine girls to the San Diego Crew Classic in late March and then attended two regional regattas, Mercer Sprints and Saratoga Invitational before last weekend’s Long Island Championships.

“We raced a lot in those first few regattas giving our athletes great experience and exposure to fast teams. It also allowed us to experiment with line-ups and boat classes, as well as informing our athletes just how fast some of the crews out there are. “
