Bronxville's Title Run Ends in Class C Final Loss

The rematch between defending Section 1 and state Class D champion Bronxville and rival Dobbs Ferry was expected to be a close contest looking back to the 2011 season opener when the Broncos slipped by the Eagles 15-14.

But Dobbs Ferry (8-1) stunned the previously unbeaten Broncos (8-1) Saturday, using a powerful running game a strategic passing offense in a decisive 38-14 victory to claim the Section 1 Class C crown at Mahopac High school. It was the Eagles first Section 1 title since winning seven straight from 2001-2007.

The Eagles, who advanced to next week’s state regional quarterfinal against Section 9 champion O’Neill next Saturday at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, rushed for 427 yards with Ritch, John Yozzo-Scaperotta and Time Soave each gaining more than 100 yards.

The Eagles snapped Bronxville’s overall 20-game winning streak (30 games in Section 1) dating back to the end of the 2009-10 season.

Dobbs Ferry opened the scoring on a Soave touchdown and the Broncos answered with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Max Boyd to wideout Matt Tormey, who caught six passes from Boyd. From there on the Eagles scored 31 straight points to take a 38-7 lead before Broncos back Christian Conway scored on a 68-yard run late in the fourth quarter to make it 38-14.

Conway finished the season with more than 1,600 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns. He and his Broncos teammates recorded a record of 20-1 over the last two seasons.
