Bronxville's Longobardo Ready for College Field Hockey Season

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- Annie Longobardo approached the summer of 2012 quite differently in preparation for her junior year on the Williams College field hockey team.

For the first time in two years, Longobardo went into the summer healthy, as injuries curtailed her performance in her freshman and sophomore years.

“This summer I worked harder than I ever have before because I want to earn a spot on the field,” said Longobardo, a 2010 Bronxville graduate. “Having my first healthy offseason was really exciting because I really felt like I could give it my all, something I hadn’t been able to do in the past.”

Longobardo said she reinjured her knee during her freshman year, which limited her playing. The injury led to surgery in spring 2011. As a result, Longobardo was unable to run for eight months. She received clearance from her doctors two weeks prior to the 2011 preseason. Longobardo practiced, but said she did not see much playing time.

“My coach, Alix Barrale, helped me realize I could still help the team be its best whether I am communicating during halftime things on the field that my teammates may not have seen or by practicing my hardest to make the team better,” said Longobardo, a history major.

This helped Longobardo gain a greater understanding of the game, she said. Longobardo, an astute player and defensive standout during her Bronxville career, concentrated on regaining her speed and her defensive skills.

“This summer I focused on my speed,” Longobardo said. “After being injured I definitely did not feel like myself and was so frustrated when I wasn’t as fast as I was in high school. I worked with a trainer and followed the packet that our strength and conditioning coach gave us.”

Longobardo said she feels great as she is currently in preseason, hoping to make up for lost playing time that injuries claimed from her.
