Bronxville's Callahan Tackles College Football

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. ? Sean Callahan is quickly adapting to his role as a college football player at St. Lawrence University less than 10 months out from his glory days at Bronxville High School.

Callahan was a standout two-way lineman for the Broncos teams that complied a 32-2 record and won the New York State Class C football championship in 2010 with a perfect 12-0 record. Saturday his upstate Saints visit Utica College for their season opener.

"So far, I am enjoying the experience," Callahan said. "The coaches are tough but are really good men. The guys on the team are awesome. The upperclassmen really have been helping me learn the new offense and the right calls to make on the line."

Callahan, a 5-11, 265-pound offensive lineman who also played baseball and competed in track and field at Bronxville, described his practice schedule at St. Lawrence.

"Football in college is way different than it is in high school," he said. "It is much more demanding now. A typical day in summer camp would be mandatory breakfast at 7, practice at 8:30 a.m. until 11, lunch, practice from 2:30 to 5 p.m. and then dinner. Team position meetings run from 6:45 to about 9:15 p.m.

Callahan hopes he can help the Saints improve on last year's 3-6 record. He's been joined at St. Lawrence by Bronxville's Ryan Hackett, a sophomore defensive back, and Paxton Cane, a sophomore lineman,

"At Bronxville, I played left tackle and nose tackle," Callahan said. "Now I am just playing guard. I'm making a lot of adjustments and getting ready for our season opener on Sept. 1.
