Bronxville's Cain Pulls Out Of World Meet Because Of Injury

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Bronxville’s Mary Cain pulled out of this weekend’s World Indoor Championships for track and field due to a calf injury.

Cain, who now trains in Portland, Ore., under distance running legend Alberto Salazar, said on the USA Track and Field website that she developed “discomfort In my lower calf” over the past week. An MRI on Saturday did not reveal any damage. “But I still feel the pain when I wear spikes and have decided not to risk making it worse in Poland,’’ Cain said. "I hope to be able to run in the World Indoor Championships many times in the future.”

Cain qualified for the world championships by winning the 1,500 meters at the U.S. Indoor Championships on Feb. 23.

She turned professional last year to train with Salazar, and ran a personal best 4:24.11 for the mile at a meet in Boston in January. She also won the mile at the Millrose Games in February, and was considered a medal contender at the world championships.
