Bronxville Track Star Reaches for Olympic Trials

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Bronxville sophomore track sensation Mary Cain won the New York State and Federation titles in the 1,500 meter event in Syracuse over the weekend.  Now, she turns her attention to the junior national meet in Indiana.

Cain reached the provisional “B” standard in the 1,500 meter event at the state qualifying meet in White Plains two weeks ago. The meet in Indiana functions as finals for the Olympic Trials, and Cain plans to run in two 1,500 meter races to try and lower her time even more.

The sophomore finished the race with a time of 4:16.52 to break her own state record for the third time. That mark is just .48 seconds below the “B” standard of 4:17. Cain said she is unsure if her time is in the top 30 in the nation, a group she would need to join to make it to the Olympic Trials in Oregon in two weeks.

“I know there’s a lot of very fast people out there…Hopefully I’ll run even faster this weekend,” Cain said.

Cain also surpassed the “B” standard of 2:05.90 in the 800 meter event with a time of 2:03.34. She is in a much more favorable position for the Olympic Trials in that event and said she does not plan to run it again. Her race at the Loucks Games last month was the last time she ran the 800 meters.

Regardless of what happens with the Olympic Trials, the sophomore earned an invite to the Nike Elite Camp in Oregon in two weeks. But she still hopes that she can run for the Olympic Trials while in the Beaver State.

“If nothing works out (with the Olympic Trials) I’m happy that I could have even gotten the standard in the first place and I have four more years to try to get in there,” Cain said.
