ARMONK, N.Y. Bronxville track superstar Mary Cain continued to dominate the competition with a comfortable win in the 3,000-meter event at the Westchester County Track and Field Championships at Byram Hills High School.
The super sophomore ran the only sub-10 time in the event, at 9:53.15. She holds the Westchester County record in that event.
Cain separated herself from the pack early in the race, as she usually does, and never seemed to slow down. She continued to stretch her lead and eventually was more than 100 meters ahead of the closest runner. Cain even lapped the last-place runner toward the end of the race.
Cain, regarded by many as one of the best high school runners in the country, did not run in the 1,500-meter event but could do so Wednesday at the Class C meet. Cain needs to shave just one-tenth of a second off her time of 4:17.1 to reach the qualifying time for the Olympic trials. She has already qualified for the 800 meter.
