Bronxville Rec Tennis Team Heads To Nationals

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Two tennis teams from Westchester County earned victories at the USTA Eastern Adult League Section Championships last weekend.

The Ryesing Stars, a women’s team from Rye Racquet Club in Harrison in the 4.0 Adult division, and the Concordia College men’s team, made up of mostly former Concordia players, from Bronxville in the 5.0 Adult division both advanced to the national championships of the largest adult recreation tennis league in the country.

Concordia will play in the USTA League National Championships Sept. 28-30 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden at the Indian Wells Resort Hotel in Indian Wells, Calif. The Ryesing Stars will play Oct. 19-21 at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center at the Doubletree Hotel in Tucson, Ariz.

The two Westchester County teams are part of a group of 11 from USTA Eastern at the national championships that will determine the top recreational team in the country.

The Ryesing Stars lost in the section tournament last year. Team captain and Harrison native Randi Coppola said this year’s team, composed of mostly the same players who have been together for several years, accomplished its mission.

“It was just an incredible experience. It’s what we worked really hard for,” Coppola said. “It was a huge team goal to make it to nationals this year and we accomplished that. We’re very proud of that.”

Daniel Rockhill, captain of the men’s Concordia College team, said via email that this will be his team’s third trip to nationals but the group was still excited to win.

“Clearly we are very pleased with winning the sectional championship,” Rockhill said via email. “We were blessed with terrific weather and the USTA put on a first rate event for everyone involved.”
