Bronxville Hosts Woodlands In Football Opener

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. ? Saturday's opening-day match-up between Bronxville and Woodlands may be a preview of the Class C football playoffs later this fall. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Bronxville High School.

Bronxville, 11-1 last year with its only loss coming to eventual Class C state champion Dobbs Ferry in the Section 1 title game, is replacing several key starters and a starting backfield that included record-setting halfback Christian Conway.

The Broncos have lost captain Luke Marrone to a broken arm and will have to go without the two-way receiver/defensive back for a few weeks.

"We are looking more determined and fired up for every practice leading to opening day," Marrone said. "We all can't wait for kickoff and to hit another jersey. I'll be on the sideline, but the boys know what to get done."

Woodlands, a force last year before losing to Dobbs Ferry in driving snow storm in the Class C semifinals, has starting quarterback Justin Riccio, who threw for 1,000 yards last fall, back to lead a strong and balanced group under coach Mike Meade. Ron Richards and Dylan Eddy are Riccio's receivers. Jonathan Stewart and sophomore Myles Thigpen are up-and-coming offensive threats.

Bronxville leads with junior quarterback Will Duncan, running back Warren Kramer and a line led by captain Peter DeJoy. Wide receiver Matt Tormey, who made several big catches last season, will bolster the passing game.

This will be a wide open contest with Woodlands testing Bronxville's ability to stop the pass and Bronxville using a strong running attack and stiff defense up front.
