Bronxville High School Senior To Compete At Triathlon National Championship

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Many teenagers may struggle to complete a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike ride or five-kilometer run on their own. In April, a Bronxville High School student-athlete will attempt to do all three, in a row, while in a competition with some of the best and brightest in the country.

For months, senior Dylan Weber has been training for the 2017 USA Triathlon High School National Championships, which will be held on April 21 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Weber, who is one of 300 high school athletes to qualify for the hotly-contested competition, earned his spot in the national championship after his performance at the Rhode Warrior Half Ironman in Rhode Island last summer. This will mark the 17-year-old’s fifth triathlon in the past three years.

A member of the high school’s varsity mountain biking, soccer and swim teams since his freshman year, Weber said he’s been training daily, pounding the pavement as he prepares for the rigorous race.

“What I enjoy most about triathlons is the aspect of taking three sports I love and combining them into one race,” he said. “It’s a very unique sport.”

In addition to the national championship, Weber has also committed to compete in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in June for the third time, the New York City Triathlon the following month and Age Group Nationals in August.

“I have always pushed myself to be the best I can be. I mostly want to compete in this triathlon to have fun and visit a place I have never been to before,” the teenager added.

“The most rewarding part of a triathlon is crossing the finish line with a good time and getting the medal wrapped around your neck. It also feels great when you’re sore the next day, because you know you worked extra hard.”
