CORTLAND, N.Y. -- When the Section 1 Class B girls soccer championships began, Shannon Crawford and her Bronxville teammates were alerted to comments. We heard that teams said we were lucky to win the sectional title last year, Crawford said. Not only did Bronxville win the 2010 Section 1 Class B title, the Broncos won the big prize -- the state championship.Bronxville showed last year was not an aberration as the Broncos defeated Briarcliff for the second consecutive year. Last week, Bronxville earned its second straight trip to the state final four with a 1-0 win over Oneonta, which was ranked No. 1 in the Class B New York State Sportswriters poll. The Broncos will play Schalmont (Section 2) Saturday, at 5 p.m., at SUNY-Cortland. The other semifinal is Cold Spring Harbor (Section 8)-Greece Odyssey (Section 5). The semi-final victors will play for the state title Sunday, at 2 p.m., at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. That was the third year in a row we played Briarcliff in the the sectional finals and it was a great game, Crawford said. It meant a lot to us to win that game for the second year in a row.Even though Bronxville is the defending state champion, the Broncos were still not accorded the No. 1 ranking in the state poll.We try not to pay attention to the rankings, Crawford said. When we heard Oneonta was No. 1 in the state, that definitely gave us a little more motivation, but it was nice being the underdogs and coming out with a big win.The veteran Broncos have eight seniors leading the team. They know what to expect this weekend, in one respect. They also realize their three opponents want nothing more than to dethrone the Broncos. No matter how familiar we are with everything, the teams are completely different his year, Crawford said. Being the defending state champs will make things harder, but everyone is ready.
