BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Internationally renowned fashion designer Vera Wang was a guest in Bronxville during the Memorial Day weekend, as she gave the 85th Commencement address at her alma mater, Sarah Lawrence College.
Wang spoke to 325 graduating seniors and 150 graduate students earning master’s degrees about her journey, from her days as a professional figure skater to her time as a fashion guru.
“I am honored to be here today, at this particular moment, to witness the beginning of yet another new generation that can both pose questions, and create solutions we could only dream of,” she said.
Karen Lawrence, the president of Sarah Lawrence College, said that the designer represents the success alumni of the school have.
“Vera Wang exemplifies the creativity, discipline and passion of our graduates, so many of whom go on to make a difference in the world,” he said. “We are immensely proud of our 1971 alumna, whose intelligence and incredible work ethic have enabled her to transform both fashion and design.”
Wang encouraged students to challenge themselves, pursue their passion and define happiness on their own terms.
“You now own the world we inhabit, don’t squander it,” she said. “Rest assured, Sarah Lawrence has equipped you for that voyage. Embrace your past, embrace your journey and embrace your future.”
