Tuckahoe Students Take Virtual Field Trip Through Google Pilot Program

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Students in Tuckahoe took special field trips to historic locations this week, becoming one of the first districts in the world to be a part of the virtual reality platform pilot Google Expeditions.

Be it Gettysburg, Pennsylvania or Verona, Italy, Tuckahoe teachers had the opportunity to design lessons around virtual field trips this week, which were viewed through an application exclusively created for educators.

As part of Google’s Pioneer Program, “teachers designed lessons around virtual field trips. These trips were then viewed through an app exclusively for schools on fold-out cardboard mounts for mobile phones.” Teachers were able to cite specific research supplied through the application and can guide students through the lesson virtually.

Still in the beta phase, more than 100 virtual field trips have been made available by Google, enabling teachers to apply the programming to a wide range of curriculum and subject matters. Tuckahoe was one of just a few districts throughout the country chosen to be a part of the testing.

Interim Superintendent Charles Wilson said that this is just the latest example of the district-wide technological initiative that has been ongoing for several years.

“We are proud to have been a beta site for this cutting edge classroom technology, which is an effective compliment to the Chromebooks that were implemented in Tuckahoe classrooms last year,” he said. “It provides an opportunity to enhance classroom learning, but also to generate excitement for technology.

“This program is further evidence of the district’s commitment to technology and adherence to its Strategic Plan. It enhances instruction and makes the learning experience more vivid and alive.”
