The district is set to purchase 700 Google Chromebooks – with the cost being spread over five years -- that will provide every student above second grade with access to laptops in the classroom by the beginning of the next academic year.
The “Technology for All” initiative is the latest attempt to modernize the district. It comes on the heels of the schools’ website overhaul, the launch of the electronic calendar, the parent portal for student information, and extension of Wi-Fi access.
Tuckahoe becomes the latest district to begin transitioning from the traditional “lab-centered” structure, which saw devices clustered in one central location toward a “classroom-centered” approach.
Just last week, the Bronxville School district accepted a $166,000 grant to purchase Chromebooks.
John Krouskoff, a certified Google expert and BOCES consultant who is also collaborating with the Bronxville School District, has been at the head of the technology initiatives in both districts. Earlier this year, he began training teachers about becoming experts in using technology in the classroom and certain Google applications.
“Chromebooks have the potential to change the way teachers teach and students learn,” third-grade teacher Michael Gray said. “The ability to integrate technology into virtually every lesson, and engage students by giving them the opportunity to collaborate with one another online both in and out of the classroom is exciting.”
The integration of Chromebooks began last year on a smaller basis, with just a few devices being spread around each school. Tuckahoe Schools Superintendent Barbara Nuzzi noted that the technology initiative is just part of the district’s larger strategic mission.
“In support of our strategic plan and mission to ‘prepare every student for excellence,’ it is critical that we provide our students with access to current, real world tools and transformative learning experiences that will enhance their education.”
