On Sunday, Oct. 19, students in grades 2 through 5 will compete to raise money for their school districts and a spot in the grand finale following a series of challenging competitions.

The TriMathlon consists of three events, which includes Magic Squares, where students develop their own problem; the Counting Game, which tests students’ ability to count from and to any number, by any number. The last event is the Mental Math Workout, which challenges participants to solve problems without a pencil and paper to demonstrate their “number sense.”

Shane Bland, the center director of Mathnasium in Scarsdale, said that the event is designed to show that doing math doesn’t have to be torturous, and can often be fun.

“The event is about getting kids in our local community engaged in math and about supporting local schools,” he said.

The free contest is open to all students in public, private or home school. The top scorers across all TriMathlon competitions will be asked back the following week for the “grand prize tie-breaker competition.” Practice materials can be found here, where parents can also register.

“The Mathnasium TriMathlon represents a wonderful opportunity for kids to have fun, test their math skills and earn money for local schools," Bland said. "It demonstrates that math can be fun and, at the same time, provides a way for the students to give back to their community, which is a wonderful lesson for kids at this age. In the Mathnasium TriMathlon, every child is a winner.”

The TriMathlon will take place from 9:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Mathnasium of Scarsdale on White Plains Road.
