BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - As social media continues to invade everyday life, students in Bronxville got a visit from police to offer advice about staying safe in a digital world.

Bronxville Middle School students, who have been learning about digital citizenship in the classroom, were joined by Bronxville Police Sgt. William Carrol and Officer Michael Lewis at the school to “discuss the importance of keeping their digital lives safe.”

Police spoke of the dangers one could encounter online or while using social media while discussing the effects of their digital footprint in a digital world. According to school officials, they “urged (students) to be careful about what they post online and to never give out personal pictures or information to strangers.”

“Everything you put online is always going to be there,” Carroll said. “You have to think about what you’re sending before you send it.”

Instructional technology teacher Kimberly Persaud said that “it’s crucial to teach students not only how to use technology, but how to do so safely.” In her curriculum, she has been making efforts to educate students about how to shape their online identity, guard their privacy evaluate information found online and how to avoid violating the rights of others.

“I always say to my students that just as we have rights, follow rules and make contributions we live in, we have similar obligations as digital citizens in an ever-evolving digital world,” she added. “In order to thrive in such a technology-dominated society, there are precautions that we all need to take.”
